Martin Povey

Obituary of Martin Robert Povey

With sorrow and love, we announce the passing of Martin Povey, age 77, on March 23, 2025. He always believed, as The Beatles sang, that ‘All You Need Is Love,’ and he shared plenty of it with everyone he knew. He’s now taken a ‘Long and Winding Road,’ but his spirit will remain in the ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, he left his mark.

Martin is already deeply missed by his loving partner, Denise Thournout, and his children Paul (Mary), Nicola (Jon), Phaedra (Michel), Jeremy (Keely), Seana (Kelly), Gavin (Julie), Melissa, and Ashley. He was a proud and goofy Papa to Accalia, Isabela, Ethan, Justine, Kyle, Bailey, Logan, Chantel, Kieran, Maddie, Dylan, and Lucy. Martin was also dearly loved by his sister, Susan (Steve) and niece Alex (Leo). Predeceased by his parents Burt and Mary, and beloved wife, Mary Lou. Martin’s warmth, quick wit, and sense of humor will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Martin put great effort into creating a sense of unity within his blended family, embracing each member with warmth and genuine care. Whether it was through shared moments of laughter, thoughtful gestures, or simply ensuring that everyone felt included, he was committed to making sure each person felt valued and loved.
He was a man whose life was as rich and varied as the music he cherished. Whether it was the timeless energy of The Who, the soul-soothing sounds of The Beatles, or the chaotic joy of drumming on copper pots and tabletops, music was the soundtrack to his life, as long as it wasn’t Michael Buble. In fact, Martin's path to the world of music was one of serendipity—he was in the right place at the right time and ended up drumming for the band that would eventually become The Who. That early exposure to the raw energy of rock and roll stayed with him throughout his life, shaping his love for music and fueling his creative spirit. His involvement in the Writers Club and the Arts and Culture Council demonstrated his deep passion for creativity, inspiring others to explore their own artistic endeavors.
Always armed with his trusty little black comb, he would spend a moment carefully checking his reflection, adjusting with a determined look and an exaggerated expression—because, of course, nothing was more important than getting it just right. That little ritual became one of his many endearing quirks. He delighted in amusing those around him, from waking teenagers up with Born to Be Alive, cheering for his favourite Formula 1 driver of the time (never Verstappen) and sharing stories of treasures found at garage sales. His love for travel and exploration reflected his deep curiosity, always seeking new knowledge. He had
a passion for history, spy novels, and books that expanded his understanding of the world. His legendary lists were a testament to his meticulous nature, while his entrepreneurial spirit and work as an event producer created unforgettable experiences. Martin's greatest legacy, however, was his role as a mentor. He shared his wisdom and guidance with all those who crossed his path, leaving an enduring mark on both the events he crafted and the lives he touched.

Martin had a remarkable ability to make every moment feel special, whether he was carefully arranging a napkin on your lap or organizing a barbecue or pool party with perfect precision. His Papa Burgers were epic, and his love for bringing people together was always clear, whether it was through loud music, live concerts, or creating lasting memories at a picnic or a quiet gathering. Food was another of his passions—his Yorkshire pudding was unrivaled, and his creativity in the kitchen, from pierogs to Sunday crepes, to chicken big mamou, always delighted. Martin’s attention to detail extended beyond his cooking, from his stylish fancy socks to his thoughtful planning of every event, from easter egg hunts to thought provoking Pecha Kucha presentations. Whether in the garden, where vibrant flowers blossomed under his care, or in the hearts of those around him, Martin’s nurturing spirit left a lasting imprint of joy and beauty, always cultivating connections and creating moments that would be cherished long after they passed.
Martin's legacy lives on through the love he shared with his family, the stories he wrote as a published author, and the knowledge he imparted to those lucky enough to know him. He was a man of depth, humor, and unrelenting enthusiasm for life, and his spirit will continue to inspire and entertain those who were fortunate enough to share his world.
Cremation has taken place and a Virtual Celebration of Martin’s life will take place on April 19th – please email martinscelebration2025@gmail.com to be included in the event invite.
