Obituary of Jeanette Margaret Butts

Jeanette "Jan" Margaret Butts, cherished wife, mother, and oma, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer, on April 29th, 2025, at the age of 68.

Jan was the affectionate wife of Erick Butts for 49 years, a partnership rooted in friendship, love, mutual respect, and unwavering support. Together, they raised two children, Jennifer Williston (Kirk Hollohan) and Robert (Heather) Butts, and built a life filled with friends, conversation, laughter, and love.

Proud and loving Oma to Madison Williston, Savoy Williston and Ellawyn Butts.  She took immense pride in each of them, delighting in their milestones, cheering on their accomplishments, and treasuring every hug, painting, and story they shared.  Their laughter was the sweetest music to her ears, and watching them grow brought her immeasurable joy.

Jan is survived by her sister Mary-Anne van der Walle and predeceased by her parents Elizabeth “Betsy” and Adrian Hoevenaars, her sister Josie Morton, and brother John Hoevenaars.  She will be forever remembered as a woman who loved her family fiercely.

Jan embraced every opportunity to show her love through her actions. She will be remembered for her strength, generosity and willingness to help and support others.

She will be celebrated with a private family gathering.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Though her chair at the dinner table sits empty, her love—and the laughter she planted in our hearts—will grow on in each of us forever.  We invite all who knew her to carry forward her generous spirit by extending compassion wherever it’s needed most.
