Jan was my nanny in Canada from the day I turned 8 in 1981. Her entry into my life was a birthday gift that can never be matched. From Jan I learned that my sarcastic and darker sense of humour wasn't unique, that I didn't need to be a doormat, and that sometimes it was best to stop arguing. Core memories include going to the Poacher's Arms and hearing the garden of accents around me while she caught up with other nannies from around the world, watching her with Pepper, our Golden Retriever, and her nod of approval when I figured out how to play some of her piano sheet music.
Jan got crotchety as she got older, and harder to be close to, but part of who I am is because of her. She will be missed, and her memory is a blessing to me.
