I knew Derek as part of the ROTB community. Gentle is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Derek. I found his smile and laugh infectious. I loved watching him take care of and spoil Lucy. As an Albertan, it was great comparing winter weather stories between southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. I think Derek won. I will miss him, but my memories of Derek will always make me smile.

Dearest Derek - I so enjoyed your humour and your love for Tom Lehrer's Vatican Rag - and other songs, no doubt. I hope you have met him and am enjoying a good chat.
You were a man of so many talents and abilities. The world is less rich for having lost you.
I send my heartfelt condolences to your daughter (do you have his cat?) and to all his family and friends.
Rest in joy, Derek.

I met Derek online in 2020 during the height of COVID. We were part of an online community that continues to meet five years later. His friendship means so much to me. I appreciated him sharing stories about his life and his career. He was very compassionate and would thoughtfully listen with an open heart and would respond with empathy and good humour. His laugh still rings in my ears. It was a treat to hear him sing to his cat and watch their beautiful connection. He made many positive contributions to my life during our time together. I will miss him; he was a good man. Sending much love to his family and friends.
