Obituary of Gary Herbert Colwell
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Herbert Colwell, age 78, of London, Ontario, on August 3, 2025.
Gary was born in Moncton, New Brunswick in 1947 to the late Herbert Colwell and Beatrice (Douthwright) Colwell, and throughout his life, he carried forward their values of quiet resilience, kindness, and integrity.
Gary faced extraordinary challenges with courage and dignity after being diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) in the early 1990s. For over 30 years, he lived bedridden, yet never allowed his condition to define him. His resilience, sense of humor, and will to live through adversity were an inspiration to all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Diane Hallam, in September 2018. Together they built a life centered around the love of their 3 children, and enduring commitment to their 3 grandchildren.
Gary is lovingly remembered by his sons: Christopher Hallam (Janet Boyachek), Richard Hallam (Sovia Kwan Hallam), and Randy Hallam. He was a proud grandfather to Minka, Emily, and Naomi, who brought him great joy and light into his life.
He is also remembered by his sister Margaret Sherar, his stepsister Gertrude Mackay, and his stepbrother Ralph Cummins. Their current whereabouts or status are unknown, but they remain an important part of Gary’s story.
Though his life was shaped by illness, Gary will be remembered for his strength, warmth, quiet wisdom, love of sports, love of trivia and the love he gave to his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A private family gathering will be held in accordance with Gary’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to ALS / SLA Canada Charity in his memory.
“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”
