Obituary of Sue Canon

Barbara Sylvia (Sue) Canon

October 17, 1931- November 20, 2025

Sue passed away peacefully at Meadow Park Long Term Care Home on November 20, 2025. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Raymond Canon (2021). She is survived by her sons, Robert and Philip (Colleen), grand-daughters Leila (Andrew Ahern) and Mallory (Jonathan Jocham) and great-grandchildren, Alice and Angus. She is greatly missed by her sister, Judy MacKay (Halifax) and special niece, Carri MacKay. She was predeceased by her beloved mother, Irene Stewart.

Sue attended school in Stellarton and New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and Normal College in Truro, Nova Scotia. She began her teaching career in a Pictou County one room schoolhouse, teaching Grades One through Nine. After a short stint in the RCAF, she taught ESL (English as a Second Language) for the Dept. of National Defense to francophone recruits in Quebec, and later to pilots from NATO countries at the NATO Language School in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. Her 17 years as a secondary school ESL teacher in London, at both Beal and Westminster S.S., were the most rewarding chapter in her career. Sue taught newcomer students from around the globe, as they began their journey to become Canadian citizens.

Music was a lifelong hobby for Sue, who played piano and sang in choirs. She sang in the Byron United Choir for 25 years and she was a devoted member of the Fanshawe Symphonic Choir since its beginning in the 1970's.

Sue loved her home province of Nova Scotia and always considered her annual visits to be "going home". Sue's final home and last chapter was at Meadow Park, where she was reunited with her husband, Ray. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff at Meadow Park, who provided such kind and compassionate care to Sue. Donations in Sue's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society.
