Betty Lou Simpson passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospice, where she received compassionate and loving care in her final days. She was deeply supported by her dear friends Bev Rawlings, Howard McTaggart, and Claudette Van Der Vaart, whose kindness and presence meant so much to her.

Betty Lou was born and raised in Winchester, Ontario into a loving and large family. She is predeceased by parents Hazel and Byron Dawson, and brothers Jack and Bob (Caroline), Betty Lou will be lovingly remembered by Marilyn (Charlie); Peter (Cecile); Deanna (Reg); and Terry (Joyce,) and her many nieces and nephews, who treasured her warmth, creativity, and gentle spirit.

Betty Lou shared a life of adventure with her beloved husband Bill, who predeceased her. Together, they travelled to more than 100 countries, embracing new cultures and experiences with curiosity and delight.

Education and learning were central to Betty Lou’s life. She attended Ottawa’s Teachers’ College and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Western University while teaching. For 35 years, she devoted herself to primary education, teaching Kindergarten through Grade 3 in Ottawa, North York, Vancouver, and London. Betty Lou was a kind, patient, and dedicated teacher who left a lasting impression on countless young lives.

A talented artist and passionate musician, Betty Lou taught music and led many choirs, sharing her love of the arts with enthusiasm and joy. Her creativity extended well beyond the classroom. Following her retirement, she became an active member of The Garden Club of London, serving as President for several years. Her deep passion for horticulture and floral design led her to complete judging courses at the Royal Botanical Gardens and to compete internationally with WAFA in Boston and Ireland.

The family will gather privately for inurnment at a later date. Condolences and messages of remembrance may be shared through Woodland Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, Betty Lou asked that donations be made to a charity that brings purpose and meaning to your own life—a reflection of her generous heart and belief in living with intention.

She will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, dedication, and the quiet grace with which she lived her life.
