Obituary of Karen Anne Varnell

It is with great sadness that family members announce the passing of Karen Anne Varnell (nee Beninger) on March 16, 2026. Karen died following a fifteen month illness that included cancer.

Karen is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Don, her precious daughter, Cassandra ( Shawn) and brave son, Gregory. Dearly loved grandsons, Nathan and Noah miss ‘their Nana’. Predeceased by her younger brother, Kevin (2020), Karen’s very supportive sisters, Dianne, Becky and Laurie miss Karen’s gentle kindness. Karen cherished her bond with Don’s sisters, Sue and Elizabeth.

A graduate of London Catholic Central High School and London Teachers’ College, Karen excelled as vocal soloist, choir member and folk group member. She was a member of the award winning, St. Cecilia Singers. Karen’s life commitment to service began as a teenage volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Her service included reading to children, feeding the elderly and assisting nurses. At age 18, Karen began a five year teaching career.

Karen’s dedication to service was remarkable. While nurturing Sandra and Gregory and supporting Don’s career, Karen served  as Brownie leader, Heart and Stroke canvasser, school volunteer for trips, medical testing, and event organization. Karen served as volunteer at Ronald McDonald House throughout its first decade. For more than 30 years, she dedicated significant effort to increasing the awareness of others to the needs of individuals experiencing mental health issues.

With family and friends, Karen and Don enjoyed many wonderful travel experiences. Karen’s attention to detail ensured the success of these adventures. The month long  ‘Four Sisters Italy Tour ’ that she planned is a noteworthy example.  Twenty winter vacations in the Destin Florida region with London, St. Thomas and Ohio friends were delightful.

Karen was happiest when she was sharing time with family members and friends.  Her artistic talent was evident in the paintings, greeting cards, ceramics and scrapbooks that she created to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and significant achievements.

Cremation has taken place. A private family Celebration of Life will be conducted.
