In loving memory of Aunt Maria
I will always remember Aunt Maria’s visits to Belgium with great warmth. Her daughter Sonja accompanied her on these journeys, and it was always such a joy to see them both. I loved listening to Maria’s stories about our family in Canada and looking at the photographs of the deep blankets of snow in winter and the beautiful Canadian summers. Most of all, I remember how proudly and lovingly she spoke about her family and her grandchildren.
One memory I will always cherish is the celebration we held to welcome my daughter when she was born. I had no idea that aunt Maria and Sonja would be there, and their presence was a complete surprise. I felt deeply honoured that they had come to share that special moment with us.
Whenever aunt Maria came to Belgium, we talked about my dream of travelling to Canada one day and meeting the family there. Sadly, I kept postponing that journey, and I deeply regret that I never made it while they were still with us.
Thank you, Aunt Maria, for all the warm moments, the wonderful stories and the connection you gave me to our family across the ocean. You will be remembered with great affection.
My heartfelt condolences to everyone who knew and loved Maria. I am sending all of you in Canada much love, strength and comfort during this difficult time.
Michelle

To the family in Canada, my sincere condolences dearest Aunt Maria. My memories of you will always remain in my heart. It was always a joy for us when you came to Belgium to visit the family. This farewell, too, even though you were so far away from us, is hard, but I will carry your smile with me forever. Rest in peace now xxx. Diane, daughter of Lizette Sobry

Maria was my mother-in-law for eight years until her son, Ed, and I, divorced in 1981. She always treated me with kindness and great respect. She was a fabulous cook, and she enjoyed sharing her recipes with me. She taught me how to bake delicious pies—a skill my family has come to appreciate very much! My thoughts and prayers go out to her grandchildren and their beautiful families. Love, Aunt Natalie Craig.
