I met Louis in the summer of 1974 at Fanshawe College. I had been accepted into the child care worker program and was to meet with him for an interview before starting school. Shortly after sitting down and perusing my biography, he reluctantly told me a mistake had been made. I wasn’t eligible for the program because I wouldn’t be 21 years old upon graduation. I would be 19. All the while we were talking, I could see him trying to figure a way out of this dilemma. I could see it in his eyes.
At some point in the conversation, I said, ‘so are you going to go out in the hallway and explain all this to my mother because I sure don’t want to tell her.
I told him we had driven all the way from Sudbury, we were staying in hotels and that it was a costly venture. I guess that was my 17 year old way of trying to make him feel sorry for me.
And then, perhaps at the thought of seeing my mother, he found a solution. He enrolled me in the behavioural sciences program, a prep program for people seeking various careers in social services. I wasn’t old enough to get into that program either but he got me in. While I was taking that prep program, I realized that I did not want to be a child care worker after all. I wanted to be a social worker and had it not been for Louis enrolling me in that prep program, I would have ended up in the wrong field of study and I would have been miserable. As it turned out, I worked for many interesting years in social services, followed by a 34 year career with Fanshawe College, my last position being in the counselling office.
He held the future of my life in his hands that day. He could have easily said no and followed the rules or he could have passed the buck but instead he went out on a limb said YES. I can guarantee you that my life would have taken a very negative turn had he said no!
I’ve thought of him quite often over the years and I’ve shared this story with many people.
I will never forget the act of kindness he showed that little 17 year old girl.
Isn’t it funny how one short interview, with one great man, can have such an impact on one’s life.
My deepest regrets

David and family; So sad to learn that your dad/grandpa passed away unexpectedly. He was born the same year as my dad! He sounds like an amazing man.
