My dad's birthday today. Found myself looking at this picture of a young father, my Dad, giving his son a fine ride.

I knew Don through my good friend Peter. Don helped me get through a grade 11 world religion essay. I remember "interviewing" him in his office in the family basement. He wrote a very eloquent summary of our interview for me in calligraphy.
I hope that Peter, Kathryn, and Karl are doing well.

Hanging around your house with Karl in the late 1970s didn't mean that I knew your father very well, but I am sorry for your loss and I trust good memories of him will sustain his family, friends and acquaintances.

Brian Carswell:
I was very sorry to hear of Professor Don's passing. I was fortunate to be a student in several of Don's philosophy and religion classes at Huron College in the mid 70's and I enjoyed his lively wit, intelligent defense of the Gospel, enthusiasm for his calling and his genuine humanity. He assured me once that "You will always have the consolation of philosophy in life" and this maxim has proven to be true for me. Don was an inspiring teacher and a great guy!

I did not know Don back in ’68 when I went to Huron. However, several years ago I was needing a spiritual nudge and I talked to my friend Brian (who was also at Huron in those days) and he suggested I connect with Don. For me, Don was the right person at the right time and gave me the nudging that I needed. May I also be able to nudge others as Don did for me.
When I think of good people who have left us, I think of Emerson’s comments (with a minor addition from me to reflect my Christian leanings):
" To laugh much; to win respect of intelligent persons and the affections of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one's self; to leave the world a little better, whether by a healthy relationship with a child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived....this is to have succeeded." And to this I (David) ask to be forgiven by adding to such a famous writer's words but wish to add: “and to love and have had moments of union with God”.
…. Ralph Waldo Emerson with a minor addition by the writer

This is very sad news which I have just learned. A very humble and down-to-earth human being who made a positive difference for so many. A superb preacher who could engage people in an experience of the Good News. Resquiate in pace. Christos anesti. My prayers for you, his dear Family.

Glenn - I was just going through some old files from Huron today. Ran across your paper "Survey of Attitudes Concerning the Relationship of Academic Studies at Huron..." I didn't realize how complicated religious study can become...I thought it was just about getting up a 6am and going to chapel!!

I was a long-time colleague of Don at Huron College. I was always glad to meet him in the halls, to share lunch when the college had a faculty dining room, or just to chat when we met casually. He cared deeply about college affairs, but his care was always interlaced with irony and garnished with a wry comment. His comments were invariably followed by a smile that conveyed skepticism about everything we had discussed, including his own views. We have not met for many years, but I will miss his presence in the world. He left mine richer.

Dear all, I have many fond memories of Don at Huron faculty of theology, house church gatherings, and as a friend. His humour sometimes covered his deep passion and commitment. He touched many of us for good. Blessings to you as you remember him and grieve his dying. May he rest in peace.

Don Irvine was a teacher and mentor during my days at Huron College - 1979-1982.
He presided at my wedding in the college chapel in October of 1981.
He introduced me to philosophy and critical thinking.
And he was the best preacher I have ever heard - always leaving you with a question to ponder.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory!

To Karl, Kathryn & Peter,
Please accept my condolences on the death of your Dad. I was fortunate enough to be a student of his at Huron College. He also became a very dear friend to me and my late husband. When the father of my children died, your dad came to our house to talk to my kids and celebrate Eucharist with us so that they could have a celebration of their father’s life. Neither of them have ever forgotten that kindness and generosity of spirit. I have taken Don’s advice and shed some tears at the loss of my friend.
Thank you for sharing your dad with me and so many others over the years.
Sincerely,
Sue McCullough+
