Al was known for his smile and remembered for whistling while he walked. He had a quiet demeanour unless he was playing cards. If so, “hold onto your pennies!” He enjoyed the taste of shrimp and Labatt Blue.

Al was born August 11, 1937 in Belgium. He moved to Canada following two of his sisters who were established here. He met his first love and started his family.

Al joined God’s choir in his 87th year on August 24th, 2023. Predeceased by his first love Margaret (nee Janssen), and by his second love Ulrike (nee Verhonik).

Survived by his older sister Martha Vermeire. Predeceased by his brother-in-law Irené Vermeire, his five older siblings and their spouses; Achiel (Mariette, nee Hertoge), Maria (André Broekhove), Madeleine (Maurice Van de Walle), Suzanne (Maurice Verlee) and Anna (Raphaël T’Hooft).

Father of Ken (Elly, nee Wolfs) and Kathy (Jim Kirk), and stepson Juergen Fruehwirth. Grandpa of Jeanine (Ryan Nicholson), Derek (Sara Doyle), Jacob (Avery Beaton), Raquel (Greg Hodgins), Dylan (Bree, nee Bootsman), Chantelle (Maël Thibault), Bridgette, Nathaniel Freeman, Tatyanna Freeman, Christopher Kirk (Morgan Blizzard), Justin Kirk (Sarah, nee Raett). Great-grandfather of Bowen, Everleigh, Wyatt, Kennedy and Knox.

Al will be fondly remembered by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and their growing families. 

A private graveside ceremony will be held in honour of his wishes. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to a charity close to your heart.
