Only learning of Ron's passing recently through a Beal reunion page I found myself searching out his obituary.
I was privileged to have been a student of Ron's (Mr. Collyer), a member for several years of his voyager canoe club and later I found myself working at Beal and heading up the voyager canoe club with him until his retirement. I also had the honour of being a member of the old Buchan House with him.
I always remembered Ron best sitting in a canoe, wearing plaid and ALWAYS four or more paddle strokes ahead of the group even if soloing his canoe. With fondness I still remember him carrying on about his camera when it fell into the water while portaging over a beaver dam. Each year when returning to the same location he would insist that we look for a beaver taking photos.
The man was a bit of a hero in my books and I owe much of what I know about the outdoors and who I have become to him.
Condolences to all of Ron's family and friends.

I had worked at H. B. Beal S. S. (bealart) for a few years before Ron hired me to teach night school and we went on to take my first school field trip together canoeing in Algonquin Park (Mr. C. wasn’t afraid to give people a chance) and continue with many more over the years with some family, teachers and friends and you learn a lot about a person’s personality when one spends long periods of time camping together (18 days) without contact with other humans and from these wonderful memories I send my condolences and best regards to the family of one of the kindest people I have had the privilege to know.
Happy Canoeing Mr. C

My deepest condolences to the Collyer family. I hadn't seen Ron for 2 or 3 years now, but I knew him personally from probably 1973 onward. He taught me one class at Beal in grade 12, and then I worked alongside Ron and the Data Pro teachers at Beal for several years. I believe it was he who introduced me to "The B.H.". He supplied many rides home for me over the years, although he sometimes claimed I was 'hard on his vehicles' for some reason!
"Mr. C" was always a kind and gentle soul, with a temperment I wish I had mastered. Canoe in peace, Ron!

To the Collyer family, I had the great pleasure of having Ron as my teacher for math and the early teachings of computers, while I was a student at H.B.Beal High School here in London, 1960-63. A great teacher, whose classes were always fun and memorable, one I will always remember. Rest in peace, Ron, till we meet again. Heaven has gained a truly fun and honourable gentleman.
