It is with great sadness that I learned about Karla's death. I met Rob and Karla when living in London, training with the same marathon group. I had great admiration for their accomplishments as athletes but even more for how great role models they were. It was always a pleasure to cross their path at the track or at Springbank Park. I also have a vivid memory of a particularly tough workout where Rob, trying to kill the marathon with a sub 2:45:00 then, looked like he was going to faint. Karla, pregnant, was encouraging him with a smile. It was very clear that there was something very special between the two. My deepest sympathies go out to Rob and the boys. A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts, through us, they live on. May you find peace in these difficult times.

We have such fond memories of shared dinners, hot tubbing with the boys, Ben and Tom playing in the backyard with Ember, mowing each other's grass, demolishing their kitchen... Our hearts go out to Rob, Ben Tom, Joanne, Tom, Monique, Kaylan and everyone who loved her.

One of my favourite memories is of Karla encouraging me to continue running with her and Kate. Even though my speed was a fraction of theirs, she continued to encourage me along up to our half marathon day where we all completed one of the worst weather runs ever! She coached me NOT to stop at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign during the run and then she ‘rewarded’ me with a stop at that sign the next day. Our trip will be remembered so fondly by me. Karla, you are a warrior, a champion, and advocate. You will never be forgotten, love, Inge xox.

I've never met Karla or her family, but I learned about her journey through a colleague of Rob's at Matthew's Hall. The joy with which that person spoke of this family and their kindness and adventurous spirit resonated with me. I am so profoundly sorry to learn of Karla's passing. I cannot imagine how difficult this time is for her loved ones. I recently lost my mother-in-law to reproductive cancer and I was so inspired to hear of all the advocacy work Karla took on during her journey. I made a personal commitment to talk to my doctor about how our clinic handles paps, HPV testing, and female health in general - encouraging them to deepen their commitment to patient care beyond provincial guidelines. Because of Karla's journey, I went and got the screening and preventative measures that I had been putting off and while I wish the circumstances were different, I am so grateful for her work. Thank you Karla - may you be at peace in your next great adventure.
