Obituary of Susan Torrington
Susan Arlin Torrington (neé Bain)
On Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the age of 70, Susan Torrington passed away peacefully in her home with her loving husband by her side following a long battle with ovarian cancer.
Susan was survived by her husband/soul mate of 47 years, Robert “Bob” Glenn Torrington of London, Ontario, her daughter Arlin Kaarina (Rob) Cuncic of Mount Elgin, and son Mark Adrian Torrington of London. She was predeceased by sister Karen (Kim) Anema of Victoria, British Columbia and survived by brother Peter (Joyce) Bain of Victoria, British Columbia. Loving GG to grandchildren Morgan and Tyler Cuncic of Mount Elgin. Predeceased by her best friend Priscilla “Perci” Kennedy. Lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Susan was born in Berwick, Nova Scotia on August 1st, 1949 to Kenneth and Edith Cavell Bain (neé Randall). She met the love of her life Bob at English Bay, British Columbia, while both were travelling; Susan from Ottawa and Bob from Toronto. They later married in Toronto and had two children. In 1978, they moved from Toronto to Ipperwash Beach, then finally settled in London, Ontario on the same street as Susan’s parents.
Susan loved her family and close friends. She enjoyed crafts, aquafit, visiting the library (books were her companions and teachers), traveling, hospice volunteering, and summers at Ipperwash Beach and Happy Hills campground. She also enjoyed overnight visits from the grandchildren, Torrington reunions, and annual Cuncic golf tournaments.
She began attending West Park Church in 2009 following retirement from nursing. In 2011, she was baptized by Pastor Dan Brubacher. Volunteering as an usher, serving communion, and helping with kids’ ministries (quilting) brought her great pleasure. During this time, Kimberly Enns, Director of Children’s Ministries became a great role model, friend, and mentor to Susan.
Susan expressed her gratitude to friends from West Park Church who walked beside her for several years; close friends from the Wellspring ovarian cancer support group who shared the ups and downs of her precarious journey; doctors and staff from the London Regional Cancer Clinic who gave her a few extra years and showed kindness and compassion; and close friends near and far who lifted her spirits along the way.
She wished not so much to live long, but to live well. A favorite quote of hers was that of Mother Theresa, “I cannot do great things in this life, only small things with great love.”
According to her wishes, Susan was cremated and her ashes will be returned to Ipperwash Beach on Lake Huron.
