My most memorable outdoors adventures were with Bernice, Gord and Ken. Bernice lead us to paddle down the coast of Lake Superior to Fisherman's cove, took us on a camping trip to the Slate Islands in Lake Superior, road trips to James Bay and the Rupert River in Northern Quebec, Camping on Lady Evelyn Smooth water , Obatanga, picking Blueberries in the Wawa Bad Lands, and many times to Killarney. Now she is on another great adventure hopefully meeting up with Gord. Her passing is certainly an end of an era in our lives. Ken, Rob and Don sorry for your loss.

It has been my honor and pleasure to have known Bernice who I met in the 1990s through our membership in the Taoist Tai Chi Society. Her enthusiasm for tai chi, as well as hiking, canoeing, skiing, baking, and volunteerism made for fascinating conversations. Bernice was a deeply devoted wife and mother; and was equally steadfast and loyal in her friendships. Her perspective always reflected the wisdom that comes from a life well lived. I admired her and loved that she could be feisty and brave, as well as kind and compassionate. Remembering Bernice, my eyes fill with tears of sadness at her passing mixed with gratitude for the good memories of our friendship. Wishing comfort and peace to all her family.

Bernice Hill doesn’t leave simple memories. Bernice leaves with many of us, indelible impressions. She lived a life that was both an example and an inspiration.
Bernice provided leadership by example and inspiration through her encouragement.
My connection to Bernice started with The Agape Foundation of London when she invited me to join the board of Directors. I’m still part of it nearly 35 years later. Her influence went deeper when finally, after years of her testimonials I undertook the practise Tai Chi.
Many of us felt that knowing Bernice and her soul mate Gordon was a privilege. I discovered that many others felt that same sense of privilege when Bernice was nominated for the “Mom of The Year Award”, a promotion conducted by a large retailer.
I was only one of the more that 30 family and friends who wrote about her influence on their lives.
Here are just a few of the things people wrote. “an amazing woman..it is hard to imagine a better way to live than she has done”
“ If she isn't calling or visiting people to care for she is making plans for Tai Chi, visiting Algonquin Park or wilderness canoeing, making plans for their winter ski club, creatively cooking with only the best ingredients of course, gardening.....the list is endless”
“She is a wonderful example to others of how sensible physical activity is a great promoter of good health and longevity
“ ....she was instrumental in organizing the Cop Camps that were held at Camp Sylvan during the summer and hosted by the London Region Council Scouts Canada. ..... they were able to learn the benefits of sharing and other social skills, so important in them becoming caring responsible adults. They had a role model in Bernice.”
“ I have seldom if ever seen anyone with such a positive attitude and willingness to help others.”
“She is a devoted outdoors person, always watching out for the interest of all mankind and how she can make a difference to preserve and protect this great world. “
” I cannot express enough gratitude to and for Bernice, who, through her own way of life, has shown me a path and inspired me to live a better life”
“It was Bernice’s inspiration and foresight that lead to the creation of Dale Brain Injury Services.
Without planting the seeds of such a facility and fertilizing it with a property and money to begin the treatment facility, nothing would have happened. “
“The Agape Foundation of London that she was instrumental in founding has granted a sum greater than the original endowed funds (www.agapelondon.ca) “
I am saddened that we have lost such a wonderful friend. Reading these testimonials written when she was in her eighties still very much alive and inspiring is a comfort.

I have known Bernice for a very long time. Our families became acquainted at the Church at Westmount when the Hills had three young boys and we had three young girls. During those years there was sharing and growing. When the Church disbanded, many continued to be friends and the Hills were amongst them.
We did not see them as often and eventually we were obliged to leave London and relocate to Ottawa, because of Tom's job transfer. We lost touch.
After some years, I became a member of the Taoist Tai Chi Society and unexpectedly ran into Bernice at a large workshop in Orangeville. Then, we were old friends once again, and from then until now.
When it cam to Tai Chi, we shared much.
Most notably however, Gordon, Bernice, Tom and I canoed the Rideau Canal from Upper Brewers Lock to Smiths Falls. That is a long way and it took us a week of paddling, camping, cooking outside, getting lost, going across two lakes and following the canal through weather, including days of rain. Gordon was in his early 80's. They were remarkable. We became closer friends than we ever had been, experiencing daily adventures along the way.
We were forever friends.

Rob,
I was very sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom. I know from our discussions, how important she was to you.
I didn't know your Mom personally, however the tribute written about her gave me an insight as to what an amazing person she was! How fortunate you were to call her your Mother. I am happy you were able to have her in your life for as long as you did.
I hope the wonderful memories you have of her will give you peace and support during the difficult days ahead.

This picture was taken in Ottawa in 2010. It was on one our Tai Chi Senior weeks workshops.
Bernice ( along with Gordon), was our leader and we always ended having such a great time.
Our group missed them when they moved to London, but she has been thought of quite often.
