Jan, I'm so sorry for your loss.
I just found out George has died
and I didn't know what to say
I tried to write a memorial
then I couldn't for several days
It seems these days only poetry helps
when I need to express my soul
So maybe it's befitting
that I write George a poem
Thank you George for letting me express
musically, my sensitive self
Thank you forever for showing me the way
to love the written word
Thank you George for introducing me to excellence
in art and commitment and beauty
Thank you for always complimenting
whenever you wrote me
Thank you for teaching me to reach for inner truth
Thank you for revealing the life in the musical note
Thank you for teaching me patience, that excellence awaits
Thank you for extra time to create something great
Thank you for coming to my house and bringing
red wine and beautiful flowers
Our room moved when you did that
Beauty came around
I will miss you George
I will miss your approving smile
I will treasure your pottery forever in my home
I will see you in a while
With love,
Malcolm Hines

Dear Jan and family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. VanOstrand's passing. He was a consummate teacher that gave me meaning to what emotional expression in music really could be.
As a genuine and honest pedagogue, he never sacrificed his ideals but instead offered reflective techniques that opened the way for my own musical growth.
His teachings prodded the "why" in music and remained as a cornerstone in my career as an educator and performer.
Rest in peace, Dr. VanO.

Dear Jan
It was with surprise and sadness that we learned of the passing of George; we had no idea that he was in anything but robust health. Mireille joins me in expressing our sympathy to you on this sad occasion.
George was one of the most emotionally honest persons I have ever known. In the groups in which he and I participated, I saw on many occasions how his honesty enabled change and growth in others. He was a good man.
Love, Gordon.

Dear Jan and family,
Sharon and I are saddened to hear of George’s passing. As I was his close colleague at Western and in numerous other professional activities, I feel that I have also lost a kindred spirit!
We shared many fine musical moments over the years. As well, George was generally regarded as the ‘gold standard’ of our woodwind teaching faculty. I certainly learned a great deal from him as a superb pedagogue and musician, and as a warm colleague and friend!
We will miss him very much.
