Dear Susan and family,
It seems I have your mother to thank for giving me my middle name, Vivien, as I was born when my parents came to Canada in 1946 and my father worked at the Polish legation in Ottawa. They were looking for a Canadian name ( my first one is Martha/Marta in Polish) and Stephanie was the one who suggested Vivien.
I am very sorry that she has passed away. She was very kind to me as a baby, and much later on, we had occasional talks about the past, my parents and their trials and tribulations when coming to a new country. Daddy ( Wladyslaw Zbik) spoke many languages including English but my mother only knew Polish and German. We moved to Montreal around 1953 and sadly my parents died many years ago, Mummy (Jadwiga) at the age of 76 from cancer in 1998 and Daddy in 2002 at ripe age of 89.
Your mother was truly blessed with a long life and in reading about her accomplishments a great and dedicated lady to all. Please accept our sympathies and attached is a photo that shows the group outside the modest house of the Polish embassy.

I have just learned that Stephanie passed last December and send heartfelt condolences to Susan and the family. My mother Jean Burke, who Stephanie always called Jeana and my grandmother Katie Paczkowska were life- long friends. I am particularly inspired by Stephanie’s work in the trade union women’s movements throughout incredibly challenging times, as I have also been working in those movements for the last 35 years. We stand on the shoulders of Stephanie and women like her. Stephanie was an incredible woman and we’ll always remember her for her joy, wonderful sense of humour and hard work for families everywhere.

Stephanie was one of my dearest friends. Though we were over 40 years apart and from very different cultures, (I am Indigenous), we had a whole world of commonality that surpassed race, religion or world view. When we got together there was always fun & laughter, in-depth discussions and always a lesson in history, politics or life in general. She was a magnificent storyteller!
She was an inspiration (and always will be) in ways too many to count.
To the family and community of Stephanie’s, my deepest condolences on losing this great woman.
I love you and will miss you with all my heart Stephanie!

I met Stephanie in the 80’s when she was helping to create the company that would be ATN with a mission to help train print disabled people and find them employment. However what I remember most is that Stephanie was a good friend. She was also like a grannie to my boys. They would walk to Stephanie’s house after school and were met with hot home made soup and wonderful stories about Tarricotta. Stephanie could tell a story like no other. Stephanie was a great help and inspiration through many of my ups and downs of life. The boys and I will never forget her. May you be at peace. Joannie Brendan and Liam

My boys and I were so sad to hear of the passing of Stephanie. Our deepest sympathies to all the family. Getting together with Stephanie was like an event. She was never at a loss for words, she had a quick wit, a dry sense of humour (which I loved), and so many wonderful stories. She loved to engage in conversations involving history and politics, subjects in which Santiago and our boys were always active participants. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to become friends with this unique and wonderful woman. We will miss you Stephanie but we will never forget you. Rest in Peace dear soul.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Stephanie. She was strong, principled, and never afraid to speak her mind. Her achievements were many, and she did so much to advance the rights of others and build a better world for all. Everyone who knew her was the better for it and she will be deeply missed.
Thank you, Stephanie, for sharing your dedication to a fairer, more just world with us.

Stephanie's upbeat passion for life and lust for knowledge has left a lasting impression on me. I’m grateful for having known Stephanie who was such an inspiration in energy, wit, and determination.
Some of my favourite memories with Stephanie are of breaking Portuguese rolls over her homemade soup which, of course, was always accompanied by a glass of wine and a terrific story. You will be missed. Love Brendan

Auntie Steph I will miss you always. You were a wonderful teacher. I learned so much from you that I will treasure forever. You were the family historian and guardian of all sorts of facts, information and terrific stories, now legends. Your prime rib dinners amazing. Your laugh contagious and beautiful smile to match those exquisite blue eyes. I will miss and always remember your visits to 'The Farm' our dinners here, the wine and the toasts to whatever came up. Your zest for life and compassion for the 'underdog' an inspiration for many. I know your telephone number off by heart and I don't think I will ever forget it. Safe passage Auntie Steph. Love you always Justine.

Ed and I did not know Stephanie for very long - only 5 short years - but she left such an imprint on our hearts. She was so loving and funny and determined to stay as independent as possible, even as her eyesight and hearing began to fail. Many a time she would say to me, when I offered to help with some little task, "Now Gale, I have to be able to do this when I'm by myself." Any time Stephanie would ask Ed for a small favour she would always start with "Now, my dear boy." Stephanie had a wonderful sense of humor and we shared many laughs together and we will miss her always. Our deepest condolences to Susan, Nicole and Natalie and family. We were blessed to have Stephanie in our lives. Affectionately, Ed & Gale Leydekkers and "Granny" Hanna.
